Chapter Thirteen

Her timing couldn’t have been worse. It figured she’d interrupt Palmer and his ex in the midst of a make out session. No wonder he’d been in such a hurry to leave. And then he’d had the nerve to think she’d meet him at the cottage. She hadn’t seen that one coming; his involvement with his ex.

Anais had read in one of the tabloids that Ellisa had married the hot new outfielder, Rex Brownell, a man almost ten years her junior. She’d thought, ‘Good for her.’ But things must not be going well. Either that or they had an open marriage.

She’d just have to focus on getting Palmer out of her system. To do that she needed to get out there and start dating again. But who had time when you were trying to build a business.

The party was winding down by the time she got back. The hired wait staff, college students actually, were collecting glasses and abandoned plates. Anais spotted Monroe and tried to avoid him.

“Why is he still here?” she asked Jacqui.

“Ask him? My guess is he came to see you.”

“OK. I think I will.”

Anais hurried over to Monroe who was chatting up an attractive dark skinned woman with braids. His eyes lit up when he spotted her. Quickly setting down his champagne glass, he gave her his full attention.

“You did good,” he said holding open his arms for a hug. Anais sidestepped him.

“Thank you. This was an invitation only affair. How did you get in?”

“I came to the open house and stayed. I would think you’d want me to be here.”

“Hardly.”

Not fazed by Anais’ less than warm welcome, Monroe’s fingers circled her wrist. “You are smoking hot, girl. I didn’t know how much I missed you until you moved here. You and I were good together.”

“Apparently not quite good enough.”

“Ok, so it took me some time to realize what I gave up. I was hoping you’d come back to New York with me. I can take care of you. You wouldn’t need to worry about working.”

There was something seriously wrong with the man. Anais took a few calming breaths before saying, “I’m supposed to chuck everything in and give up my dreams to be with a man who cheated on me?”

“I’m ready now to plan a future together.”

Unbelievable!

“As usual, it’s all about you,” Anais said, unable to keep the disgust out of her voice. “There was a time when I would have jumped at the chance of living with you, but not anymore. I don’t trust you. One woman will never ever be enough for you.”

“A man’s entitled to make a few mistakes,” Monroe said, as if she hadn’t spoken. “There’s been no one else that matters, Anais. You’re the only one I ever cared about.”

“This admission comes way too late,” Anais said. “I no longer have feelings for you.

This time Monroe actually looked deflated. Anais felt sorry for him, but she didn’t see the point in sugarcoating things. Why give the man false hope. He’d had his shot and he’d blown it.
